ABU DHABI // A man who is accused of insulting the country’s leaders on social media was referred to the State Security Court on Monday.
H H, 33, who is from another Gulf country, and four other people, who were not present in court, are accused of spreading information, news, data, rumours, and images on Twitter and Instagram as well as two separate websites.
They were charged with ridiculing and damaging the country, leaders and symbols of the UAE in an offensive manner.
The defendant requested the court enable him to speak to his father so he could appoint a lawyer of his family’s choosing.
He also requested the public prosecution let his Embassy know of his situation.
Judge Falah Al Hajeri agreed to his requests and adjourned the next hearing until March 2.
The defendants will be tried under the new cyber crime laws.
