ABU DHABI // An Omani man accused of attacking a police officer and resisting arrest has claimed he was the victim in the incident and should not be charged.
According to A I’s defence lawyer, the incident happened when CID officers were called to arrest the defendant’s brother, who was accused of attacking an Indian man.
When the agents arrived at the scene, A I said that he stepped in to try to explain the situation to them, arguing on behalf of his brother.
“The [agent’s leader], called E, started to perform a move they teach in karate with the handcuffs where they twist it in the air and then it wraps around the wrist,” A I’s defence lawyer said.
As a reaction to the move, A I raised his hands in the air to push away the cuffs and as a result was struck on the head, causing an injury that required 10 stitches.
“Then E went and reported the incident as if he were attacked by the defendant, and said his colleagues were trying to rescue him from A I’s clutches.
“Then his conscience woke up, when he discovered he was not being charged in the case and he withdrew his accusations, but it was too late,” the lawyer said.
A I is appealing against a six-month suspended sentence.
“Because he is an Omani, he has been suspended temporarily from his job until he gets cleared,” his lawyer said.
The case was adjourned.
