DUBAI // A maid was sentenced at Dubai Criminal Court on Tuesday morning to three months in jail for stealing jewellery worth more than Dh100,000 from her sponsor and hiding them in feminine hygiene pads.
Filipina MP, 24, said she stole the items because she wanted to run away from her allegedly abusive sponsor.
Records show that she had been working for Egyptian sponsor AE, 44, since July 2013 and in March she was caught with the jewellery.
“When police arrived they found my brother’s watch with the maid as well as a Nokia phone and two of my shirts and one pair of trousers,” said AE.
“When the police asked her if she had taken any other items, she said no.”
However, when the Filipina was taken to the police station, the stolen jewellery was found in the hygienic pads. Police also found two memory cards, a USB stick and a toolbox that belonged to the sponsor’s ex-husband.
“I leave my valuables in a drawer and since there is no one at the house except my two sons, aged 3 and 5, I didn’t fear that they will be stolen,” said the sponsor.
MP will be deported after serving her jail term.
