Magnitude 4.2 earthquake strikes off UAE coast

RAS AL KHAIMAH // An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter Scale struck beneath the Strait of Hormuz, northeast of Ras Al Khaimah, on Sunday. The earthquake was first spotted by the Seismological LAN at Dubai Municipality.

The National Centre of Meteorology & Seismology said the nine-kilometre deep quake occured at 5.18pm, 192 km away from Dubai and 319 km from Abu Dhabi. It was not felt in the UAE.

Officials described the earthquake as a “mild tremble” off the Musandam peninsula.

Iman Al Khatibi, head of the Geodetic and Marine Survey section, said that the Municipality has developed a seismic monitoring system to issue an immediate report in all the cities of the UAE with the aim of getting a quick response and determining the effect of the tremor.

This development came as part of the authority’s responsibility to the public to facilitate the access of information, and to educate residents in line with Dubai Municipality’s vision for public safety in the emirate.
