Dubai // A labourer was hit by a car as he climbed out of a manhole.
A driver failed to brake sufficiently at a diversion near Al Khail Road in the Jumeirah Village area at about 10.30am on Sunday, and ploughed into the man.
"He tried to break but failed. He hit a number of road cones and then hit the labourer and pushed him down into the manhole and caused him severe injuries," said Major General Mohammed Al Zaffin, the head of the traffic department at Dubai Police.
The labourer, a 40-year-old, was transferred to Rashid Hospital.
The speed limit in the area is 40kph. It was unclear what speed the motorist was driving.
