DUBAI // A janitor smashed an alcohol bottle over his boss’s wife’s head and then robbed her of jewellery and cash, Dubai Criminal Court heard on Wednesday.

Indian M S, 23, told police he was under severe financial pressure so he hatched a plan to rob his boss’s home while he was at work.

Prosecutors told the court that he stole a pair of earrings and a golden necklace worth Dh17,000, as well as Dh2,000 in cash from Indian housewife K M, 25. She said that on March 19, she heard a knock on the door. She did not know the man at the door but he said he was a friend of her husband and asked if he could come in.

“As soon as I opened the door, I noticed an empty alcohol bottle in his hand,” K M said. “He jumped in and hit me on the head with it immediately. I felt immense pain and felt blood coming down from my forehead.

“He forced me to sit down on a chair and told me to give him all the jewellery that I was wearing and all the money I had in the house.

“I was terrified and bleeding – I gave him everything he asked for and he left the house.”

Emirati policeman, A A, 31, said: “After we apprehended the suspect, he told us that he came up with the idea of stealing from the house knowing his boss was at work. He picked up an empty bottle of alcohol from a garbage bin where he resides and went to his boss’s house.”

The police found the golden necklace and pair of earrings in his possession.

The janitor pleaded guilty to breaking and entering, assault and theft and told the judge that he was under an immense amount of stress due to financial matters.

He also said that he was very sorry and asked for leniency in the sentencing.

A verdict is expected May 28.
