IT engineer arrested for spying on colleague through her home surveillance cameras

The IT engineer allegedly set the cameras up to transfer footage to his computer after he fixed a problem with one of the cameras for her

An IT engineer has been apprehended for allegedly spying on a female colleague’s home through her surveillance cameras.

The family of a woman in Sharjah, who asked a colleague to fix her home security CCTV after something went wrong with one of the cameras, have accused the IT engineer of tampering with the cameras so he could watch them at home.

"Weeks after he came to fix the cameras, the family started to feel suspicious. They said they felt someone was watching them," said Sharjah police's organised crime department head, Colonel Abdul Aziz Al Jarwan.
The family waited several months to take action, but then lodged a complaint with the police.
Within a few hours, the police's technical team had discovered that footage was being transferred from the family's cameras to an unknown recipient.
Police were soon able to locate the suspect and apprehend him.
"We found his computer to contain several images and sound clips of the family, which he had saved on his device," said Al Jarwan.
The Arab engineer, in his 30s, admitted to the crime and was referred to the public prosecution for further investigations.
Al Jarwan urged community members to turn off their security cameras when at home, and warned them against using unlicensed companies for the installation or maintenance of CCTV cameras.
