DUBAI// An airline passenger who was caught with four kilograms of crystal methamphetamine stashed in his luggage was sentenced to seven years in jail on Monday.
The 24-year-old Iranian N Y was also fined Dh50,000 after Dubai Criminal Court found him guilty of smuggling the drugs with intent to sell.
The court heard that N Y had flown into Dubai International Airport when a customs inspector noticed him acting suspiciously.
“I searched him and found nothing but then I searched his bags and found the drugs hidden in the wheels of the bags,” said the inspector, K M, 29.
N Y denied the charges, saying he was bringing the bags from Iran for a man who lived in Dubai.
“I don’t even know what the substance is or know anything about it,” he said to the judge.
He will be deported once he has finished his sentence.
