Investigations into a blaze that tore through the top of a ship in the Mussaffah area are under way.

The vessel was still in place on Wednesday afternoon with black scorch marks visible up one side.

Sources, who did not wish to give their names, said the fire took place several days ago.

It is unclear which company is responsible for the vessel but sources said it was either in for repair or being decommissioned.

It is believed the vessel is linked to the oil and gas industry.

Mussaffah Industrial City 2, where it is located, has several jetties and there are sprawling oil service providers that fix oil rigs and ships.

The wider port area is one of shipyards, steel companies, glass manufacturers and industrial suppliers.

Police on Wednesday said Civil Defence teams had prevented the blaze from gutting the entire ship.

No one died or were injured, they said. The cause of the fire is still unclear.
