ABU DHABI // The billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates will tell a summit in the capital today that polio can be eradicated in five years and more than 20 million lives saved by 2020.
Meanwhile, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi pledged a donation of Dh440 million to support global efforts to eradicate polio by 2018, ahead of the Global Vaccine Summit tomorrow.
Part of the donation will be used to try to eradicate the preventable disease in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Polio can cause a range of symptoms, including muscle weakness and paralysis.
“Saving generations of children from preventable diseases is a humanitarian initiative that can only be achieved through global collaboration,” said Sheikh Mohammed, who is also Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.
The summit is due to begin at 7.30pm

UAE's role in anti-extremism recognised
General John Allen, President of the Brookings Institution research group, commended the role the UAE has played in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.
He told a Globsec debate of the UAE’s "hugely outsized" role in the fight against Isis.
"It’s trite these days to say that any country punches above its weight, but in every possible way the Emirates did, both militarily, and very importantly, the UAE was extraordinarily helpful on getting to the issue of violent extremism," he said.
He also noted the impact that Hedayah, among others in the UAE, has played in addressing violent extremism.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
