UAE rare disease awareness week to begin next week

ABU DHABI // An awareness week for rare diseases in being organised by the Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences, to be held beginning on February 21.

Abdullah bin Souqat, executive director of the award, told state news agency Wam that the event aims to raise awareness of prevention and treatment among both healthcare professionals and non-specialist.

Dr Fatima Bastaki, a consultant of paediatrics and clinical genetics at Latifa Hospital, said a specific session on rare diseases will be held after the event during the third Arab Paediatric Medical Congress, to be held in Dubai on February 25 and 27.

The congress is held under the patronage of the Hamdan Medical Award, with the participation of about 500 specialists.
