ABU DHABI // The annual Pink Caravan horse ride conducted nearly 4,700 free breast cancer checks during its nine-day journey around the UAE.
The ride, where more than 100 male and female riders took part, began on March 7, taking in all seven emirates.
Under the slogan Soldiers of Pink Hope, it aimed to improve awareness of breast cancer and the importance of early detection.
The organising committee said 4,089 women and 602 men were screened, with 1,557 being referred for mammogram examinations and 283 for ultrasounds.
“The sixth Pink Caravan managed to achieve good results in awareness and providing free examinations to detect breast cancer in the past nine days,” said Dr Sawsan Al Madhi, head of the Pink Caravan medical and awareness committee.
“We were pleased with the overwhelming public turnout the ride received on its first day in the capital.”
The ride is held under the patronage of Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, and with the support of his wife, Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, founder and Royal patron of the Friends of Cancer Patients organisation.

'Worse than a prison sentence'
Marie Byrne, a counsellor who volunteers at the UAE government's mental health crisis helpline, said the ordeal the crew had been through would take time to overcome.
“It was worse than a prison sentence, where at least someone can deal with a set amount of time incarcerated," she said.
“They were living in perpetual mystery as to how their futures would pan out, and what that would be.
“Because of coronavirus, the world is very different now to the one they left, that will also have an impact.
“It will not fully register until they are on dry land. Some have not seen their young children grow up while others will have to rebuild relationships.
“It will be a challenge mentally, and to find other work to support their families as they have been out of circulation for so long. Hopefully they will get the care they need when they get home.”
