DUBAI // Parents are being urged to prevent asthma attacks by ensuring that children with the condition are not exposed to too much dust during the cooler winter season.
One child in five in the UAE is said to suffer from the disease, according to the World Asthma Foundation.
Sufferers are advised to take care when venturing outdoors, because building projects and sandstorms can throw huge amounts of dust into the atmosphere, according to Spanish pharmaceutical company Cinfa.
The ensuing poor air quality can exacerbate symptoms of coughing, wheezing, breathlessness and chest tightness.
Allergens such as dust mites in humid areas are also triggers that asthma sufferers need to be aware of, while poorly maintained air-conditioning systems can create respiratory problems.
Cooler weather also raises the incidence of flu and other infections, which can be triggers for asthma attacks.
"When the mercury dips, we all want to get outside and enjoy the weather conditions," said Dr Ahmed El Hakim, a senior adviser to Cinfa.
"That is a healthy thing to do, but asthma sufferers need to remember to take precautions so that they can maintain a good quality of life. Sufferers should be cautious on bad weather days, when there is a lot of sand and dust in the air. Make sure that they aren't increasing their risk of catching flu or other infections, and, above all, always follow the course of treatment prescribed by their doctor."
People with asthma are advised to follow prescribed courses of medication.
