New Dh50 million health insurance programme for Sharjah government staff

SHARJAH // The Ruler of Sharjah has announced a new medical insurance programme covering families of the emirate’s government employees.

The programme will cost Dh50 million a year, will benefit about 9,000 people and will include cover for treatment abroad, said Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, on a radio programme.

Sheikh Al Qasimi said that all government employees were covered in the health insurance programme and that a new project will be launched to provide healthcare insurance for people aged above 65 who receive social assistance, which affects 2,515 individuals.

An annual sum of Dh250m will be added to the social assistance that citizens get from Social Services Department, of which Dh150m goes to the beneficiaries and Dh100m will be allocated to administration and treatment costs in the service of the recipients, The National's Arabic sister paper, Al Ittihad, reported.

Stormy seas

Weather warnings show that Storm Eunice is soon to make landfall. The videographer and I are scrambling to return to the other side of the Channel before it does. As we race to the port of Calais, I see miles of wire fencing topped with barbed wire all around it, a silent ‘Keep Out’ sign for those who, unlike us, aren’t lucky enough to have the right to move freely and safely across borders.

We set sail on a giant ferry whose length dwarfs the dinghies migrants use by nearly a 100 times. Despite the windy rain lashing at the portholes, we arrive safely in Dover; grateful but acutely aware of the miserable conditions the people we’ve left behind are in and of the privilege of choice.
