SHARJAH // The Ruler of Sharjah has announced a new medical insurance programme covering families of the emirate’s government employees.

The programme will cost Dh50 million a year, will benefit about 9,000 people and will include cover for treatment abroad, said Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, on a radio programme.

Sheikh Al Qasimi said that all government employees were covered in the health insurance programme and that a new project will be launched to provide healthcare insurance for people aged above 65 who receive social assistance, which affects 2,515 individuals.

An annual sum of Dh250m will be added to the social assistance that citizens get from Social Services Department, of which Dh150m goes to the beneficiaries and Dh100m will be allocated to administration and treatment costs in the service of the recipients, The National's Arabic sister paper, Al Ittihad, reported.
