FUJAIRAH // Free health testing for women will be available this week at malls in Fujairah and Ajman.

It is part of an initiative to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease – the number one killer of women not only in the UAE but across the world.

The tests will include blood pressure, blood sugar, body mass index and cholesterol level checks.

The Go Red for Women campaign is being introduced in partnership with the Ministry of Health and City Centre Clinic, whose doctors will perform the testing.

Salwa, an Egyptian woman shopping at the Fujairah City Centre Mall, said the free testing was a good thing.

“I noticed the poster when I first arrived at the mall – it is a great thing to host such a campaign. Our society is in dire need for this kind of awareness,” she said.

“I almost lost a friend last year because of a sudden heart attack, although she was looking perfectly healthy. It is a silent disease and hard to be predicted by yourself unless you were fully aware of the symptoms.”

According to the World Heart Federation, cardiovascular disease and strokes kill 8.6 million women annually.

Screenings will take place at the City Centre Mall in Fujairah on Wednesday from 10am to 7pm and at the City Centre Mall in Ajman on Friday and Saturday.
