DUBAI // A foundation has begun organising educational workshops to raise awareness about child abuse.

The Dubai Foundation for Women and Children’s project aims to educate at least 560 pupils, teachers and administrators in 14 kindergartens in the emirate.

Twenty-two children, 15 teachers and administrative staff took part in the first workshop at Al Huda Kindergarten.

The three-day workshops are for those who work with youngsters, parents and their children.

The foundation aims to provide kindergarten teachers and parents with the skills to meet the psychological needs of children and to detect signs of child abuse.

There will be three types of workshops. The first will be on the definition of child abuse and the tell-tale signs.

The second type is to teach parents about rights and needs of children, according to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The third type aims to teach children about child abuse and what they can do to protect themselves from harrassment. Maitha Handol, a kindergarten staffer, thanked the foundation for the initiative.
