ABU DHABI // The Zakat Fund gave Dh17 million in zakat during the first quarter of the year, benefitting 2,014 people.

The authority carried out 17 projects to assist orphans, widows, students, new converts to Islam, people with low incomes or in debt, and the elderly, reported Al Ittihad, the sister Arabic-language paper of The National.

Abdullah Al Muhairi, secretary-general of the Zakat Fund and head of the Zakat Distribution Committee, said they follow clear-cut standards for deciding which families are eligible for zakat alms. The committee is transparent and fair in giving zakat, he added, saying every family is different with regards to revenues and obligations.
