The Emirates Red Crescent has launched an initiative to distribute 200 tonnes of dates in 10 countries before Ramadan.

This initiative was launched under the directives of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.

“The ERC will ensure that dates are delivered to beneficiaries in the 10 countries before the beginning of the holy month,” said Dr Mohammed Al Falahi, secretary general of Emirates Red Crescent.

“Some of the shipments are allocated to refugee camps and internally displaced people.”

He said the initiative comes at a time when the food crisis affects millions of people in vulnerable countries.

He said these problems were aggravated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

On Friday, the UAE said it had sent medical aid and food to Equatorial Guinea after explosions rocked the Central African country's main city, Bata.

At least 107 people died and 600 were injured in the incident at Nkoa Ntoma military camp on March 7.
