ABU DHABI // One of the most significant municipal projects of 2015 was the near completion of the Onwani or “my address” scheme across the capital.
The Department of Municipal Affairs said about 99 per cent of the 66,000 buildings had been given address numbers.
Also, 97 per cent of the 6,600 streets had been given names and 17,000 streets provided with signage with the city.
The Onwani project will be implemented across the rest of the emirate throughout 2016.
The municipality also completed its Seismic Risks Monitoring and Management Project by setting up 50 observation stations. The centres will help detect earthquakes and other natural disasters and assist in future urban planning projects.
In October, Abu Dhabi Municipality carried out two Dh17 million projects to resurface and improve roads in the emirate.
The work, expected to be completed by July 2016, aimed to improve the standards of roads to improve safety.
The municipality also worked on pedestrian safety throughout the year, building pedestrian bridges across busy roads.
In November, it announced that it would build a further 12 in 2016.
The plans include bridges over Sultan bin Zayed the First Street (Muroor Road), the Abu Dhabi-Al Ain road, the Dubai motorway, Musaffah Road, and in front of Khalidiya Mall.
Musaffah Al Marar, deputy general director at the municipality, said the bridges would “ensure safe mobility for pedestrians, prevent run-over accidents and maintain traffic flow”.
