A month-long event dedicated to innovation kicked off in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.

Innovation Month seeks to harness the power of government bodies, the private sector, the community and education groups to show how the UAE is a hub for innovation.

Some of the major parts include Innovator 2018 and Abu Dhabi Science Festival, which takes place on the capital's Corniche next week.

The Innovator 2018 contest, for example, will see 100 innovators compete for the title of  "distinctive" project. The event is being overseen by the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge .

About 35,000 visitors are expected to attend next week, along with thousands of pupils. While in Al Ain, 600 pupils and 8,000 visitors are expected to attend six interactive workshops at three shopping malls.

There is also a week-long interactive programme as part of the lema? (Arabic for why) science education programme, while Google is set to open an innovation hub in Al Ain. A hackathon is also part of Innovation Month with local universities signing up.

Innovator 2018 will be open for pupils from 9am to 1pm and will be open to the public from 4pm to 10pm on weekdays and 2pm to 10pm on weekends on the Corniche.

The event on Thursday was launched by Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoon, Member of the Executive CounciI, and it is one of the largest innovation festivals in the world. It aims to build on the success of UAE Innovation Week, which ran in 2015 and 2016.
