ABU DHABI // The Higher Narcotic Drug Review Committee has called for 400 kinds of synthetic drugs – also known as spice – to be made illegal in the country.

The recommendation was made during the committee’s meeting on Saturday by chairman Dr Amin Hussein Al Amiri, assistant undersecretary for Public Health Policy and Licensing.

He noted that the UAE was the first country in the Middle East, and fifth in the world, to outlaw spice under anti-drugs legislation.

Nearly 40 manufactured drugs have been identified and banned at present.

Dr Al Amiri said that about 400 different types of synthetic drugs that have similar effects to cannabis had been identified worldwide. He said that banning these drugs would be a pre-emptive step to stopping their use in the country.
