AJMAN // Police have warned of the dangers of swimming in the sea during rough weather after a weekend in which two men drowned.

The bodies of the two men, described as Asian, were recovered from the water off the Ajman Corniche and taken to Sheikh Khalifa Hospital, said Col Nasser Al Zari, spokesman for Ajman Civil Defence.

Civil defence also rescued three Arabs while they were swimming despite warnings to beachgoers of bad weather and rough seas, said Col Al Zari.

Red flags were placed on the beach to warn visitors not to swim. Col Al Zari urged the public to abide by the warnings when there is bad weather.

“They should wear life jackets and should not swim at night because of the difficulty of seeing swimmers in the sea,” he said.

Dubai Police search and rescue department warned people not to visit beaches until Tuesday because of strong marine currents after beach-goers were rescued from drowning in five separate incidents within an hour.

Lt Col Jumaa Al Falasi, director of the department, said on Sunday that the incidents occurred near Burj Al Arab Beach between 11.30am and 12.30pm. Police prepared rescue boats, jet skis and other equipment in case of emergencies.
