ABU DHABI // Slaughterhouses in the capital processed more than 25,000 carcasses during the first week of Ramadan.
Abu Dhabi City Municipality said there has been a huge increase in the number of customers using the service.
In total 25,222 carcasses were processed in the first seven days of the holy month, an increase of 12.6 per cent compared to the first week of Ramadan last year.
Abattoirs in the capital dealt with 14,127 sheep, 10,368 goats, 412 cows, and 313 camels this year.
With demand increasing, the municipality has provided improved equipment and increased manpower.
They offer veterinary services to test animals before and after slaughter, and meat safety is monitored to make sure it complies with local and international standards.
Abu Dhabi slaughterhouses are open from 6am to 6pm throughout the week during Ramadan.
A third night shift was added at the Abu Dhabi, Baniyas and Shahama slaughterhouses. The night shift runs from 10pm to 1.30am.
Fees for slaughter are Dh15 for each goat or sheep, Dh40 for a calf or young camel, and D60 for an older cow or camel.
These include cutting the slaughtered sheep or goat into four pieces, and camels and cows into six to eight pieces.
