BERLIN // Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, met German chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed and Ms Merkel discussed ways of enhancing bilateral ties as well as regional and international issues, with a focus on the Syrian crisis and the course of peace talks in Yemen.
Efforts by both countries to fight extremism and terrorist organisations, as well as the latest developments in Iraq and Libya, also featured prominently during the talks.
Mrs Merkel said Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed’s visit comes “within the framework of the long-standing, strong friendship ties between the two countries”, reported state news agency Wam.
Sheikh Mohammed passed on President Sheikh Khalifa’s greetings to the German Chancellor, and offered his best wishes of further progress and prosperity to the German people.
The meeting also included discussions on boosting economic ties, as well as cooperation in development and education.
“There are great prospects for broader cooperation and participation and for creating promising opportunities for the benefit of both sides, particularly in areas of economy, trade, investment, technology, science, knowledge, education and renewable energy,” said Sheikh Mohammed.
Mrs Merkel wished President Khalifa good health and the UAE more progress and prosperity.
The Abu Dhabi Crown Prince was accompanied by Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed, National Security Adviser, and Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, at the meeting, which took place at Schloss Meseberg Palace.
