Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed spoke of his pride at the success of the Zayed Charity Marathon after offering a royal welcome to its organising committee on Monday.

The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces commended the humanitarian values of the event during the official gathering at Qasr Al Bahr.

The sixth annual marathon, held in the Egyptian city of Suez in December, raised vital funds for Cairo University's National Cancer Institute.

A prize fund of 2 million Egyptian pounds (Dh458,000) was on offer to the race winners.

The race has previously been staged in the capital, Cairo, as well as in Luxor and Ismailia.

The annual event aims to honour the legacy of the UAE's Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed.

"We are proud of the model embodied by the Zayed Charity Marathon, which has become the humanitarian ambassador of the Emirati sports charitable initiative and the values and solidarity it embodies, starting with its association with the name of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan, and his goals that enhance the spirit of co-operation and partnership with others to overcome their suffering and difficulties,” Sheikh Mohamed said.
