DUBAI // The government of Sharjah has issued a raft of decrees promising wide-ranging reforms to the emirate’s public sector.

The decrees, issued by Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, include the establishment of three new public bodies, as well as the promotion of several officials to key government posts.

The biggest of the reforms is the establishment of a Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority.

A decree suggested that Yousuf Saleh Al Suwaiji, who is director general of Sharjah Public Works Department, would chair the transport authority.

The Sharjah Department of Statistics and Community Development will also be set up, headed by Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Thani. An urban-planning council will also be established.

The full powers and functions of the three new bodies will be clarified by later decrees, the state news agency Wam reported.

In a separate decree, Sheikh Sultan appointed Saeed Musbah Al Kaabi as chairman of Sharjah Education Council.

The Ruler also announced the reformation of the Sharjah Executive Council. The decree states the council will include the several departments and authorities, including the Sharjah Ruler’s Court, the Housing Department, Department of Civil Aviation, and the Sharjah Education Council.
