More than two tonnes of a banned chewing tobacco has been seized from worker accommodation in Sharjah, police have said.
Authorities raided the property after being tipped off by a labourer who spotted the goods hidden in a room on the site.
Khalifa bu Ghanem Al Suwaidi, director of civil inspection at Sharjah municipality, said the tobacco had since been destroyed.
Tools used for processing and packing the shipment for distribution were also confiscated.
“It was seized and destroyed while the owner of the property was referred to authorities to face legal action,” he said.
Anyone caught selling banned tobacco products in the UAE can face a Dh5,000 fine.
Mr Al Suwaidi urged members of the public to continue to report those selling tobacco illegally.
Who was Alfred Nobel?
The Nobel Prize was created by wealthy Swedish chemist and entrepreneur Alfred Nobel.
- In his will he dictated that the bulk of his estate should be used to fund "prizes to those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind".
- Nobel is best known as the inventor of dynamite, but also wrote poetry and drama and could speak Russian, French, English and German by the age of 17. The five original prize categories reflect the interests closest to his heart.
- Nobel died in 1896 but it took until 1901, following a legal battle over his will, before the first prizes were awarded.
