SHARJAH // Promoting the rights of children and mothers is at the heart of a campaign aimed at making the emirate the capital of children’s rights and women empowerment.
The Sharjah Baby-Friendly Emirate Campaign recently held a panel discussion at the Supreme Council for Family Affairs to introduce the campaign and its activities to government departments, authorities and nurseries in the emirate.
The goal was to encourage participants to join the campaign and get official accreditation as a baby and mother-friendly environment. To get accredited, organisations must show that they ensure mothers are provided with appropriate facilities, such as a maternity room, and mother-friendly workplace policies.
“We seek to encourage more organisations and nurseries to join the campaign as part of the campaign’s strategic plan to target organisations in the central and eastern regions and to complete accreditation of the remaining organisations in the emirate of Sharjah,” said Dr Hessa Khalfan Al Ghazal, director of the executive committee of Sharjah Baby-Friendly Emirate Campaign. “We intend, also, to highlight the importance of breastfeeding to child health ... and welfare of the next generations.”
In the past two years, the campaign has held more than 548 meetings and visits with several government and private bodies in Sharjah, conducted 40 training courses and workshops, and provided basic training to 915 providers of maternity and child health care in government and private health facilities in Sharjah. Training sessions were also provided to 963 professionals.
