ABU DHABI// Planning experts from Abu Dhabi have been sent to the Seychelles as part of a year-long project to study how to develop the island country’s economy.
A week-long visit by a team from the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (UPC) will begin preparing the Seychelles Strategic Plan.
The project is born from the desire of President Sheikh Khalifaand Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, to improve bilateral relations.
“This is an exciting opportunity for the UPC and is the first time we’ve collaborated with an international government in this capacity,” said Falah Al Ahbabi, general manager of UPC.
The UPC delegation will draw upon their experience in shaping Abu Dhabi's growth and share expertise with other governments and planning agencies, he said.
“As the population of the Seychelles is growing and the economy is changing, the need for a thorough development plan is becoming increasingly important to ensure that the country’s resources are used as efficiently and sustainably as possible, while still retaining its history, culture and beauty.”
The plan will cover all the islands, with particular focus on the main island of Mahe. A framework plan will be developed for Mahe and a detailed master plan will be done for Victoria, the capital.
Issues relating to land use will be examined and the plan will address priorities for the country in growing and diversifying the economy while protecting the country’s environment and heritage.
