ABU DHABI // A memorial is to be built near Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque to honour the nation’s war heroes.
The structure will be built on the eastern side of Sheikh Zayed Road, the Martyrs’ Families’ Affairs Office of the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince’s Court announced on Monday.
It is being built after a directive from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, state news agency Wam reported.
The MFAO, the authority responsible for building the memorial, said the location was chosen because of the ease of access it offers from all directions.
“The memorial site will be designed as a major national and cultural destination that honours the heroes of the UAE and the patriotic values they represent,” the MFAO said.
“It will also be an expression of the UAE’s appreciation for the ultimate sacrifices of its sons for the sake of the nation.”
The MFAO said the memorial will translate into reality the desire of UAE President Sheikh Khalifa to “immortalise the names of the men who gave up their lives while performing their national duty to keep the UAE flag flying high”.
The Government has also announced its plans for UAE National Day on December 2.
The Higher National Committee of the UAE’s 44th National Day Celebrations said that the main event at Zayed Sport City will be historic in nature, containing traditional dances and heritage displays.
The committee extended the invitation to the general public to participate in this momentous occasion.
Residents can get free tickets to the event using their Emirates ID. Tickets are available at national day booths in malls across the country.
The committee also pointed out that personal vehicles will not be allowed in Zayed Sports City on National Day. Attendees are encouraged to use the shuttles that will be provided at Al Shahama and Yas Island.
