A thousand companies have benefited from the Government’s decision to institute a grace period for the payment of labour-card fines, the Ministry of Labour has said.
The grace period began on Sunday and will continue until March.
“Business owners who have paid fines within the grace period have saved up to Dh17 million, as the value of the total calculated fines imposed on their practices before the deadline was Dh18.5m,” said Humaid Al Suwaidi, an assistant undersecretary at the ministry.
“Within the first two days we received the payment of Dh1.5m.”
He said all employers should take advantage of the grace period and speed up the payment of fines this month and next month to avoid incurring late charges.
Beginning in March, there will be a late-payment penalty of Dh500 a month in addition to the initial fines.
Mr Al Suwaidi also advised company owners to keep abreast of the conditions for the electronic labour permits by regularly visiting www.mol.gov.ae for the ministry's E-Netwasal services, or by using its latest smartphone app, available at Apple and Google Play app stores.
Through this service, employers can determine labourers’ employment conditions, pay fines, cancel work permits and report absent employees.

When it is unveiled at Abu Dhabi Art, the Standing Tall exhibition will appear as an interplay of poetry and art. The 100 scarves are 100 fragments surrounding five, figurative, female sculptures, and both sculptures and scarves are hand-embroidered by a group of refugee women artisans, who used the Palestinian cross-stitch embroidery art of tatreez. Fragments of Sheikh Zayed’s poem Your Love is Ruling My Heart, written in Arabic as a love poem to his nation, are embroidered onto both the sculptures and the scarves. Two-step truce
The UN-brokered ceasefire deal for Hodeidah will be implemented in two stages, with the first to be completed before the New Year begins, according to the Arab Coalition supporting the Yemeni government.
By midnight on December 31, the Houthi rebels will have to withdraw from the ports of Hodeidah, Ras Issa and Al Saqef, coalition officials told The National.
The second stage will be the complete withdrawal of all pro-government forces and rebels from Hodeidah city, to be completed by midnight on January 7.
The process is to be overseen by a Redeployment Co-ordination Committee (RCC) comprising UN monitors and representatives of the government and the rebels.
The agreement also calls the deployment of UN-supervised neutral forces in the city and the establishment of humanitarian corridors to ensure distribution of aid across the country.
