UMM AL QUWAIN // A four-year-old girl passenger has died of brain injuries after she hit a car windscreen in a collision with a taxi.

The girl was in the front seat of her parents’ car when the accident took place on Monday afternoon on Al Ittihad Bridge towards King Faisal Street.

Col Saeed Obaid bin Aran, director of the traffic and patrol department at UAQ Police, said the taxi driver braked suddenly and the car carrying the girl struck it from behind, throwing the child forward.

“Because there was not enough space between him and the taxi in front of him, he collided with it from the back,” Col bin Aran said, referring to the driver.

“The girl hit the windscreen and suffered internal bleeding to her head.”

She died after several hours of her arrival at UAQ Hospital. Her father, mother and brother were treated for minor injuries.

Police did not clarify whether she was wearing a seatbelt or not, but Col bin Aran urged all parents not to place young children in front seats.

From July 1, all vehicle occupants must wear a seat belt by law or the driver faces punishment.
