ABU DHABI // A gang attempting to sell antiques smuggled into the country has been arrested.

Abu Dhabi Police began tracking three men after an investigation confirmed they had antiques – including manuscripts, daggers, gems and ancient coins - into the country to sell at high prices.

The men were arrested in a hotel in Abu Dhabi and the goods were confiscated, said Col Dr Rashid Bourshid, head of CID at Abu Dhabi Police.

During questioning, a member of the gang led police to another man who he said had more antiques, reported Aletihad, the Arabic-language sister newspaper of The National.

Police arrested the fourth man and confiscated those items.

The smuggling and sale of antiques is a punishable offence under international and UAE Criminal Law.
