Gang kidnapped guards from construction site before stealing Dh170,000 worth of cables, Dubai court heard

DUBAI // Two security guards were kidnapped by a gang of three men who tied them up and abandoned them in a remote area before stealing Dh170,000 worth of electric cables from a construction site, the Dubai Criminal Court was told.

Pakistanis A Y, 32, A A, 23, and S A, 32, denied theft and kidnap charges when they appeared in court on Tuesday morning.

Prosecutors said that on July 21 last year the three men drove to a construction site in Al Barsha shortly before 5am and attacked the security guards, forced them into a car and abandoned them in a remote area of Sharjah.

A Y, A A and S A then returned to the site and stole electric cables worth Dh170,000, which they sold for Dh44,000.

A Y told prosecutors that A A and S A planned the crime and his role was to drive. He said he was paid Dh3,000.

“I was contacted by my assistant who told me that the guards at our site were kidnapped,” said Pakistani A M Y, 47, head of security.

P K, a 40-year-old security guard from India, said he and his colleague were attacked by three men who stepped out of a Nissan Sunny. “Some of them were in Emirati traditional clothes and covering their faces,” said P K.

He added that the men tied him and his colleague up, blind folded them and drove them to a desert area before leaving them there.

Police investigations said A Y, A A and S A were linked to the crime and later arrested. “They confessed willingly,” said policeman S A, 40.

The officer added that the men confessed to selling the cables to a scrap shop in Sharjah. Bangladeshis P P, 27, and S M, 25, were also charged with possessing stolen items.

The next hearing will be on March 13.

How has net migration to UK changed?

The figure was broadly flat immediately before the Covid-19 pandemic, standing at 216,000 in the year to June 2018 and 224,000 in the year to June 2019.

It then dropped to an estimated 111,000 in the year to June 2020 when restrictions introduced during the pandemic limited travel and movement.

The total rose to 254,000 in the year to June 2021, followed by steep jumps to 634,000 in the year to June 2022 and 906,000 in the year to June 2023.

The latest available figure of 728,000 for the 12 months to June 2024 suggests levels are starting to decrease.
