Friday sermon: Don’t upset others with your words

Prophet Mohammed was a role model for others because he displayed politeness and good manners to people of all backgrounds and ages.

ABU DHABI// Ethics and manners are the topics of this Friday’s sermon, where worshippers will be reminded to speak kindly towards others else remain silent.

“Allah’s divine messages called for people to enrich their behaviour with noble ethics ... so they will accomplish their mission in building the Earth,” worshippers will be told.

Prophet Mohammed’s final sermon stressed the importance of ethics, while he always maintained ethical behaviour.

In fact, he was seem as a role model for others because he displayed politeness and good manners to people of all backgrounds and ages.

Prophet Mohammed once told his companions that those who would be closest to him on judgement day would be those who behaved most ethically.

In another hadith he said that the true Muslim is one who never harms people with his tongue or hand.

The sermon cites another incident when Prophet Mohammed was informed about a woman who constantly fasted, prayed and donated generously to charity but regularly upset her neighbours with her sharp tongue. The Prophet Mohammed said this woman’s rightful place was in hell.

They then informed him about a woman who infrequently fasted, prayed and donated money, but never hurt her neighbours with her words. The Prophet Mohammed told them her place is in heaven.

“A Muslim who adopts his religion’s ethics, does not pronounce a word to hurt people with it.” concludes the sermon. “A word is counted either for you or against you,” it will say.
