A footballer who plays for a local team drunkenly attacked a police officer and broke his leg, Dubai Criminal Court was told.

The American footballer, 30, attacked the policeman from behind while the officer was speaking to a colleague near Bur Dubai police station.

"I didn't see him. He came from behind and hit me on the leg with a solid object," said the officer, 48.
The policeman fell over but the footballer kept hitting him and swearing. The second officer tried to stop the attack but, unable to restrain the accused, rushed into the station for backup.
"It was the evening shift when this happened. I couldn't stop him," said the second Emirati policeman, 36.
The attack happened on December 29, 2014, though court records did not clarify why the case to more than four years to be heard in court.
During police questioning, the accused said he could not recall the incident, claiming he was too drunk.
The next hearing is scheduled on March 17.
