Fog alerts by phone part of new warning system to prevent road accidents

Phone alerts on heavy fog and poor visibility are part of a National Early Warning System that has been launched by Abu Dhabi Police to warn drivers and limit accidents.

The system is being used by the police in co-operation with the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority to send cautionary messages to road users and residents, reminding them to be careful while driving in specified areas during bad weather conditions and heavy traffic, according to Wam news agency.

This was highlighted by the Abu Dhabi Police last month during a workshop on innovative solutions using traffic patrols and smart towers to analyse weather conditions and pinpoint areas that are prone to serious traffic accidents.

The plan is for the system to be deployed over a wide geographic area as part of partnerships between the police, NCEMA and phone service operators to enable sending messages directly to the public via their mobile phones.

This will help drivers decide whether to take alternative routes and understand that they need to be careful while driving, the police said.

Workshops would be organised by the Abu Dhabi Police and NCEMA to increase information about the National Early Warning System as part of the emirate’s overall plan to make the roads safer.
