ABU DHABI // Al Ain Police arrested 65 per cent fewer beggars this Ramadan compared to 2011.

Only 10 beggars were arrested this year, according to Brig Gen Hamad Ajlan Al Amimi, Al Ain Police chief.

"Most of them were caught in residential areas with various currencies in their possession," he said.

He attributed the drop to the efforts of law enforcement officials as well as an increased understanding among members of the public about the detrimental effects of begging and more awareness among beggars of the legal consequences of begging in the UAE.
