ABU DHABI // Syrians in the UAE will soon be able to get their passports extended for up to four years through the Syrian embassy in Qatar.

The opposition embassy in Doha confirmed on Thursday that they were now accepting applications for passport extensions from Syrians living in Qatar.

In two months, Syrians outside Qatar will be able to apply as well, with the option of a two-year extension for 100 riyals (Dh100) or four years for 200 riyals.

In a press statement, the embassy said one of the biggest obstacles facing expatriate Syrians was obtaining or renewing their passports.

“For that reason, an official renewal sticker was issued bearing the certified official insignia and in conformity with technical and security specifications and according to international standards,” the statement said. “The renewal shall be deemed official as it was issued by an official authority under the national coalition, which is the sole legitimate representative of the Syrian people.”

Fifty-two countries, the United Nations, the Arab League, the European Union, the Organization of Islamic Conferences and the GCC, were notified about the renewal sticker. Only one country rejected the proposal, although the embassy would not name it.

UAE Syrians welcomed the news, but some were wary that accepting the renewals would mean they would be blacklisted by the Syrian government.

Malek Khalaf, A Brazilian-Syrian in the UAE, said some people have had to go through great lengths and pay thousands of dollars to secure passport renewals through unofficial channels.

Those who wish to apply for the passport extension are urged to call the embassy in Qatar on 0097440208222.
