A new website aims to make it easier for people to choose a sustainable lifestyle.

From June, World Green Citizen will enable people to share information about sustainable practices.

Visitors will also be able to assess their effect on the environment in five main categories – water, energy, food, waste and carbon.

“The website is for people who would like to act,” said Van-Trung Tran, executive director and Arabian Gulf representative of World Green Citizen, who is based in the UAE.

“We are trying to reach out to people who are looking for information and do not know where to find it. The website brings the sustainable development context down to the level of everyday life.”

Visitors to the site will be able to share and compare their performances against other users and track their achievements over time.

The website will also allow users to rank companies with good sustainability records and flag ones that need to improve.

Mr Van-Trung said he had been working on the concept for four years.

He said he was relying on a team of volunteers from as far afield as France, Germany, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia and the US.

He said his ultimate goal was to show people how seemingly simple everyday decisions – such as showering, or buying household cleaning products – affected the planet.

More information is available on the group's Facebook site or www.worldgreencitizen.org, which will be activated in June.
