UAE’s rainmakers head to the far East

ABU DHABI // The UAE’s efforts to solve the problem of water scarcity will soon stretch as far as the Pacific Ocean when a local delegation travels to the Far East later this month.

With the objective of exchanging research and innovations with other meteorological organisations, representatives from the UAE’s Research Program for Rain Enhancement Science will be making stops in Thailand and Japan from October 19-30.

“Our initiative is geared to help to advance scientific and technical research in the field of rain enhancement in the UAE and other arid and semi-arid areas around the world,” said Omar Al Yazeedi, Director of Research and Development at the National Centre of Meteorological and Science.

The Emirate’s need for consistent rain inspired the Ministry of Presidential affairs to launch a US$5 million (Dh18.4m) competition for up to five projects that can stimulate rainfall.

More than 300 scientists and researches from 151 organisations in 34 countries are competing for the grant money to date according to the NCMS.

“We are confident that the award winners will successfully develop strong research projects and forge collaborative synergies with all scientific partners and concerned organisations engaged in this field,” said Al Yazeedi.

As well as sharing details of its own programmes the delegation hopes to benefit from Thailand’s experience in boosting rainfall in agricultural areas as well as Japanese scientists’ knowledge of weather forecasting and cloud seeding in hot and cold climates.

Earlier this year a high-ranking UN official said the UAE is regarded as one of the driest countries in the world with its total water consumption exceeding 24 times the natural recharge capacity.

Groundwater resources and desalinated water are the primary sources of potable water in the UAE.

In the village of Mevagissey in southwest England the housing stock has doubled in the last century while the number of residents is half the historic high. The village's Neighbourhood Development Plan states that 26% of homes are holiday retreats. Prices are high, averaging around £300,000, £50,000 more than the Cornish average of £250,000. The local average wage is £15,458.

Three ways to boost your credit score

Marwan Lutfi says the core fundamentals that drive better payment behaviour and can improve your credit score are:

1. Make sure you make your payments on time;

2. Limit the number of products you borrow on: the more loans and credit cards you have, the more it will affect your credit score;

3. Don't max out all your debts: how much you maximise those credit facilities will have an impact. If you have five credit cards and utilise 90 per cent of that credit, it will negatively affect your score.

Dust and sand storms compared

Sand storm

  • Particle size: Larger, heavier sand grains
  • Visibility: Often dramatic with thick "walls" of sand
  • Duration: Short-lived, typically localised
  • Travel distance: Limited
  • Source: Open desert areas with strong winds

Dust storm

  • Particle size: Much finer, lightweight particles
  • Visibility: Hazy skies but less intense
  • Duration: Can linger for days
  • Travel distance: Long-range, up to thousands of kilometres
  • Source: Can be carried from distant regions

Nepotism is the name of the game

Salman Khan’s father, Salim Khan, is one of Bollywood’s most legendary screenwriters. Through his partnership with co-writer Javed Akhtar, Salim is credited with having paved the path for the Indian film industry’s blockbuster format in the 1970s. Something his son now rules the roost of. More importantly, the Salim-Javed duo also created the persona of the “angry young man” for Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan in the 1970s, reflecting the angst of the average Indian. In choosing to be the ordinary man’s “hero” as opposed to a thespian in new Bollywood, Salman Khan remains tightly linked to his father’s oeuvre. Thanks dad.
