Fog covered the skies from the west to north of the emirates on Monday morning, and is expected to form on Tuesday early morning as revellers celebrate the New Year.

The National Centre of Meteorology said the timing of the fog formation cannot be predicted, and advised people driving to and from New Year's Eve celebrations to check the centre's website for updates before hitting the road.

Police also warned motorists to drive with caution on Monday.

Fog was reported in Abu Dhabi, its suburbs, Al Dhafra, and across the northern emirates on Monday morning.

Visibility is expected to be less than 1 kilometre until 9am.

The temperature reached an average of 19°C in Abu Dhabi at around 7am, with 89 per cent humidity.

The wind speed was only 2.9 kilometres per hour.

In general, the sky will be cloudy throughout the day over the sea and coastal areas. It will be relatively humid for this time of year at night and early morning.
