DUBAI // Heavy rain and high winds caused a sandstorm on Tuesday afternoon which caused motorists to drive with caution and many pedestrians to wear face masks.
The severe weather resulted in high winds which in turn whipped up sand and affected visibility between Dubai and Sharjah.
The sandstorm caused huge traffic jams on Sheikh Zayed Road during the rush hour.
The winds died down at about 6pm but a forecaster at the weather bureau urged drivers to take extra care on the roads on Wednesday in case of repeat conditions.
He said that the period leading up to autumn was often marked by rain and sandstorms owing to changing air pressure.
