ABU DHABI // Swiss pilot Andre Borschberg landed Solar Impulse 2 at John F Kennedy International Airport on Saturday after flying over New York City’s landmarks.
“With #NewYork awake in front of me, I dream of a city powered by #solar power,” Mr Borschberg said in a tweet posted along with a photo of the city’s brightly lit coastline.
The five-hour flight from Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania was the 14th leg of Solar Impulse 2’s round-the-world trip that began in Abu Dhabi in March last year and is sponsored by Masdar, Abu Dhabi’s clean energy company.
“We are pleased to have Solar Impulse 2 in New York,” said Majid Al Suwaidi, UAE Consul General in the city. “The whole team has shown enormous resolve and commitment.”
Swiss co-pilot Bertrand Piccard will take the controls for the next leg, across the Atlantic. “The Monaco Mission Control Centre has already started looking for a clear weather window to cross the pond,” the Solar Impulse team wrote on its website.
