ABU DHABI // Solar Impulse 2 is expected to complete the final leg of its journey across the US on Tuesday as it flies from Pennsylvania to New York.

The solar-powered plane is due to leave Lehigh Valley airport at about 8am UAE time on a four-hour journey to JFK airport in New York, its final stopover in America before attempting to traverse the Atlantic Ocean.

Pilot Andre Borschberg, who will be at the controls for this leg, said on Twitter: “In #Si2’s cockpit I will be able to observe with awe the lights of the amazing city that never sleeps.”

The plane will make a flyover of the Statue of Liberty, said Mr Borschberg.

“I am looking forward to his incredible flyover,” he tweeted.

The Masdar-sponsored project, which aims to be the first plane to circumnavigate the world only using the sun’s power, began in Abu Dhabi in March 2015 and is expected to end in the capital.
