Nine tonnes of waste collected on first day of Sharjah clean-up campaign

SHARJAH // Nine tonnes of rubbish was collected on the first day of the Clean-up UAE campaign.

The week-long campaign was organised by the Emirates Environmental Group and more than 5,500 people were cleaning up at 66 sites across the emirate.

The Clean Up UAE campaign, which started in December 2002, is now an annual event in all seven emirates. “The EEG reiterates the necessity of preserving the environment by maintaining cleanliness, recycling and making this an integral part of the activities one carries out on a daily basis,” said Habiba Al Marashi, the chairwoman of the group.

“It is through such simple operations that one can draw raw materials and other such environmentally valuable material away from landfills, in addition to conserving natural resources from the risk of exhaustion.”

The clean-up ends on Friday.
