Abu Dhabi Corniche Park has been named one of the world’s best public parks after scooping an international accolade.

The park was one of just three worldwide - out of 100 green spots in contention - to receive the International Green Flag Public Award, in an international poll by the UK-based Green Flag Organisation.

The other winners were Provinciaal Groendomein Rivierenhof in Belgium and Tim Smythe Park in Ireland.

All 100 sites that competed for the honour are Green Flag Award holders – a scheme which recognises and rewards well managed parks and green spaces in the UK and around the world.

More than 1,000 votes were cast across 12 countries in the poll, which rated the parks on their services, facilities, environment as well as the public health, safety and security standards.

"It's inspiring to see so many residents from local and regional communities vote for their favourite park around the world,” said Carl McClean, international development manager for the Green Flag Award.

“It really does acknowledge the hard work and dedication put in by those employees and volunteers that maintain these highly recognised parks."

Abu Dhabi Corniche Park is described on the Green Flag Award website as a modern, carefully landscaped, recreational area with continuous and level footways and paths, plus safe crossing points and underpasses, which are wide, pleasant and pedestrian friendly.

The park was awarded its Green Flag earlier this year, joining Dalma Park, Umm Al Emarat Park, Khalifa Park and Al Rahba Park, which have all been certified since 2015.

A spokesperson for the Municipality said the department was “thrilled” to receive the award, which was a result of good planning and governmental support to create world-class parks and recreational facilities.
