Lorries at quarries and crushers in Fujairah are now required to pay an environmental tax enacted by the Natural Resources Authority.

A fee of Dh7 per tonne of mineral resources will be charged per truck, according to Engineer Mohammed Saif Al Afkham, Director General of the Municipality of Fujairah.

The fees will be collected directly from lorry drivers by a team from the Natural Resources Authority.

“The new tariffs aim to preserve natural resources, whereas the revenues will be allocated to projects to ensure a pollution-free environment,” said Mr Al Afkham.

Ali Qassem, Director General of the Natural Resources Authority in Fujairah, said the number of quarries shut down in 2015 for environmental violations reached 12 quarries, reported Al Ittihad, the Arabic language sister paper of The National.
