ABU DHABI // The Environment Agency Abu Dhabi has published a six-volume reference book on endangered animal and plant species.

The book, Endangered Species, which features information about about critically endangered animals, is designed as a learning aid for pupils between the ages of eight and 12.

“By nurturing a love of nature and biodiversity among the children, we are laying the foundations of a generation that will protect and conserve the environment,” said Fozeya Al Mahmoud, director of Environmental Outreach at EAD.

He said despite its arid climate, the deserts of the region are home to at least 800 plant species, 64 land and marine mammals, 67 reptile and 430 bird species.

Razan Al Mubarak, secretary general of EAD, said: “We hope that these books inspire a new generation of biological studies. The UAE is located in a desert and arid area, with one of the most fragile ecosystems in the world. However this land is still accomodating amazing number of plants and animals.”

Scientists estimate that one in eight species of birds, one in four reptiles, and one in three species of amphibians are on the brink of extinction. Also, 75 per cent of the world’s fish species are also in imminent danger.

The book was launched to mark World Biodiversity Day on May 22.
