DUBAI // Revellers may need to wrap up warm to usher in the new year on Saturday, with weather forecasters predicting a chilly evening across the country.

People planning to watch the midnight fireworks should be braced for the mercury to drop to as low as 17° Celsius, with light winds expected in the evening.

However, forecasters warned there is a chance the fog that has covered parts of the country in recent days could return.

The increase in humidity over the weekend is likely to increase the chances of fog and heavy fog at times on Friday. While on New Year’s Eve, fog is expected in inland areas in Abu Dhabi and around Al Ain and Liwa.

Temperatures are expected to reach a maximum of 32°C in the interior and 29°C at the coast over the weekend. Conditions in the Arabian Gulf and Oman sea will be moderate in general.

On Thursday, severe fog in Dubai caused numerous delays to Emirates flight arrivals and departures at Dubai International Airport.

“Emirates apologises for the inconvenience caused,” said the airline.

Emirates urged customers to check their flight status on the airline’s website for the latest information.
